DEPARTURE


Departure: some explanation

With the success of the first edition of Etterbeek’s Parcours d’artistes, the Collective decided to revive itself in the adventure of Etterbeek’s Parcours d’artistes in 2016. For this new edition, the Collective has chosen to address the theme of “Departure” and to propose to the public to follow it in a photographic journey during which several photographic series will be presented by each of the photographers of the Collective.

 

With this project, Sabrina wants to invite the public to follow the migrants in their new departure on European soil. Beyond the clichés, the idea of this project is also to show through a photographic series, what this new start in the life of a migrant represents but also the opportunities for the host country.

Hilda will try to find a contrasting view of the start using the urban landscapes.

With a few photos, drawings and texts, Philippe will deal with the theme of crossing a border, mental or physical, a sign of a great departure … often to a stranger, another world … often a crazy bet … Misunderstood.

How to translate this into photographic terms? Perhaps we should start by asking the question of what we may mean by departure: where do we start without necessarily knowing where we are going or perhaps where we would like to be. Every moment of life can change our starting point and our vision of the future which itself will determine where we would like to go. In this unstable world, Peter was inspired by the surge that followed the attacks of 22 March in particular as it appears Place de la Bourse in Brussels the day after the attacks.

Ces visions, avec un surprenant mélange de béton, de verdure et de valeurs humaines, nous les avons présentées aux bruxellois et aux visiteurs de passage pendant près de deux mois, le cadre des caves voutées des Halles Saint-Géry donnant une sérénité à l’ensemble qui contraste avec la vie trépidante alentour propre au cœur de Bruxelles.

Bruxelles n’est pas seulement capitale européenne. Bruxelles c’est aussi la plus internationale des villes d’Europe avec plus de 183 nationalités différentes. Selon le World Migration Report de 2015 (publié par l’Organisation Internationale pour les Migrations) Bruxelles est d’ailleurs la deuxième ville la plus cosmopolite au monde. Selon ce même rapport, 62 % de ses habitants sont nés dans un autre pays ou ont des antécédents liés à l’immigration. Bruxelles, espace en mouvement permanent, perfectible, ouvert et parfois déroutant en est l’expression vivante. Ce cosmopolitisme qui a façonné la ville, contribuant à sa richesse culturelle, linguistique et patrimoniale, est aussi une source incroyable d’inspiration pour les artistes venus du monde entier s’installer à Bruxelles.

Avec « Kijk ….Bruxelles » nous avons voulu mettre à l’honneur cette dynamique propre à Bruxelles qui surprend mais surtout attire et fascine tant l’étranger: Bruxelles, terre d’accueil ; Bruxelles, ville jeune ; Bruxelles, capitale européenne ; Bruxelles, smart city ; Bruxelles, ville durable ; Bruxelles, ville verte ; Bruxelles ville en mutation ; etc. Les thèmes abordés par les photographes sont donc ceux de l’éducation, de la formation et de l’insertion professionnelle, du monde associatif et les travailleurs sociaux, de l’urbanisation et de la végétalisation.

They are called Mutea, Sabah, Marwan, Mays and Mohamad and come from Damascus and Aleppo. They never thought they would have to leave their country, abandon their relatives and friends without knowing if they would ever see them again, to seek refuge in Europe. They lived happily in Syria, until the war broke out, and the bombing, the death threats, did push them to take the road and cross the Mediterranean, alone or with wife and children, for a better future.

Their names are Mehari, Sulamiet, Habtom, Letesalese and Muquet. They were shepherds or nurses, and fled their country, Eritrea, the most brutal dictatorship in the world, still called the “North Korea” of Africa,

Despite the traumas, the separation from their loved ones, all now aspire to a new beginning, to find a job as soon as possible, to no longer depend on State aid and finally to be able to thank those who welcomed them for their solidarity.

As long as my legs allow me to flee, as long as my arms allow me to fight, as long as my experience of the world allows me to know what I can fear or desire, no fear: I can act. But when the world of men compels me to observe its laws, when my desire breaks his brow against the world of the forbidden, when my hands and my legs are imprisoned in the relentless shackles of prejudice and culture, So I shudder, I moan and I cry. Space I lost you and I’m going back to myself?. I lock myself up at the top of my steeple where, head in the clouds, I make art, science and madness.
