WOMEN TODAY

WOMAN TODAY

“Women Today” is the first joint exhibition of the Collectif “Tête-Bêche” where we joined forces with our individual photo projects.

The celebation of 8th march, the Women’s Day 2014 created the opportunity for this exhibition with the support of the Commune of Etterbeek. With regard to the situation of women here and today, we have tried, in our own way, to capture in photographs an aspect of what would be the life of one or more women at the beginning of the 21st century.

Such a series of photos will never give more than a few elements of reflection on the theme of women today and is an invitation to the spectators to seek their own questions and answers.

Their names are Georgia, Maria, Melissa, Lamyae, Ouafae, Karima, Jocelyne and Elisa.
At the same time mothers and family pillars, they have experienced different life paths, sometimes painful. They have in common not to give up despite the accidents of life, a family break-up, or the violence, which plunged them into precariousness.

Their struggle is identical, to build a stable future project, to be autonomous. They are obsessed with the same questions. How do you manage, for yourself but also for your children? How do you reconcile responsibilities as a mother and as a woman? How to reconcile work, social and family life?

There is however no self-pity in these women who remain discreet on their personal journey. They are lucid, responsible, formidable of determination, and determined to bounce back. When you’re a mother and a pillar of the family, you don’t give up.

Despite the difficulties encountered, the inequalities that persist, for some, this dream life finally arrives, but at what cost?

The woman’s private space should be the best place to judge her situation in society.
If she feels respected and comfoartable at home, the woman has every chance of being respected in other circumstances as well.
Are our families truly equal …?

In most societies, there have always been and are women who know how to find their way, sometimes out of necessity, sometimes out of conviction. Many literary works such as plastic arts praise it.

In fact, these women, who are able to steer their boat, need a given strength of character, in he past as well today. Where do we find these women today? Not only and not primarily in the leadership spheres.
Annebeth, Pascale and Sandra, by their presence, suggest that they are part of this group of women.
Annebeth, a painter from Norway who works in a room bathed in light in which one vainly seeks an easel and also transmits her knowledge to the children.
Pascale, coach of the junior basketball team of the Etterbeek club (UAAE) who is fully invested in the benefit of young players while she seems to have a busy life elsewhere.
Sandra who ensures that “Le Purgatoire” is a place of well being where the stranger feels quickly accepted.

Gender diversity is one of the priorities of gender equality. According to a French study, less than one in eight occupations can be considered truly mixed. This situation penalizes not only women but the entire economy by reducing the pool of talents available by increasing recruitment difficulties for employers, particularly in sectors where jobs are not outsourcable.

Professional equality, in the same working conditions, between men and women is therefore a human, social and even strategic issue for society and businesses.

Dominique and Chantal are two women who are training as technical building managers.
